Shortly after I returned from Hawaii in April, I learned that Georgia O’Keeffe also spent some time on the island. During her nine-week stay in 1939, she produced a largely unknown series of paintings and sketches consisting of exotic flora and Hawaiian landscapes. Upon her arrival, O’Keeffe wrote to her husband, “A kiss to you — soft and quiet like this air.”
